A database consists of user-de ned space for the permanent storage of user objects such as tables and indexes. This space is allocated in one or more operating system les. Databases are divided into logical pages (of 8 KB each), and within each le the pages are numbered contiguously from 0 to x, with the value x being de ned by the size of the le. You can refer to any page by specifying a database ID, a le ID, and a page number. When you use the ALTER DATABASE command to enlarge a le, the new space is added to the end of the le. That is, the rst page of the newly allocated space is page x + 1 on the le you re enlarging. When you shrink a database by using the DBCC SHRINKDATABASE or DBCC SHRINKFILE command, pages are removed starting at the highest-numbered page in the database (at the end) and moving toward lower-numbered pages. This ensures that page numbers within a le are always contiguous. When you create a new database using the CREATE DATABASE command, it is given a unique database ID, and you can see a row for the new database in the sys.databases view. The rows returned in sys.databases include basic information about each database, such as its name, database_id, and creation date, as well as the value for each database option that can be set with the ALTER DATABASE command. I ll discuss database options in more detail later in the chapter.

You can quickly list all the values of an enumerated type with the GetNames and GetValues methods. The former returns a String array holding the individual names (sorted by the corresponding values); the latter returns an Object array that holds the numeric values:

13.1.2 Loose coupling Several design patterns are based on loosely coupled objects. A loosely coupled system refers to a system where the objects and components aren t directly dependent on one another. Loosely coupled objects are connected through an interface; the dependent class uses the interface to communicate to the concrete services. The opposite of a loosely coupled system is a tightly coupled system. Figure 13.1 shows a tightly coupled application Calls Class A Class B where ClassA directly calls ClassB. There s no way to replace or edit ClassB without recompiling and changing the system. Figure 13.1 In a tightly coupled applicaTightly coupled systems are hard to test, tion, the classes are directly referencing change, and maintain because of the dependeneach other. This makes the classes depencies between the components. It s also harder to dent on each other and makes it harder to build tightly coupled systems in teams and to split replace classes and layers. the systems into separate parts or domains. In a loosely coupled system, ClassA doesn t directly depend on ClassB. Instead, it uses a contract or an interface that defines the coupling. Figure 13.2 shows how ClassA depends on an interface, in this example, IService. This interface is used by both ClassB1 and ClassB2, which can be hosted in the same solution or in another

Dim names() As String = [Enum].GetNames(GetType(DataEntry))

The space in a database is used for storing tables and indexes. The space is managed in units called extents. An extent is made up of eight logically contiguous pages (or 64 KB of space). To make space allocation more ef cient, SQL Server 2008 doesn t allocate entire extents to tables with small amounts of data. SQL Server 2008 has two types of extents:

Dim values As Array = [Enum].GetValues(GetType(DataEntry))

Uniform extents These are owned by a single object; all eight pages in the extent can be used only by the owning object. Mixed extents These are shared by up to eight objects.

Figure 13.2 In loosely coupled systems, the dependent class uses an interface to communicate with its services. This arrangement allows for easier updates of the services, even during runtime, and a clear separation of layers in the application.

It looks like you might be missing the start character for code 128A (103), 128B (104) or 128C (105). This number is weighted with a '*1', just like the first character in your barCode string. I also think you have to do the math with the Code 128 values (i.e.
